Dr Barlow never cursed or lost her cool, she was the embodiment of scientific detachment and rationality, the rock around which everyone could rally. Whatever about that, the cascade of recent events had upset even her equilibrium: the alpha loris crushed; the beta loris stolen away, thrown into a revolution, imprinted onto not one but two persons and even had a name inflicted on it. That was entirely unscientific, unrealistic and impractical; it violated the very bedrock of fabricist principles ... you didn't give a name to your knife, fork or spoon and fabrications were every bit as much things and tools as that, even if they were living on

It was hard, loving someone who lived so close yet so far away. It was harder when the person you loved was crying their eyes out and all you could do was whispered soothing words over skype, because your parents were sleeping down the hall and you'd stayed up until 3 a.m. on a school night again.
But it was worth it- god was it worth it. Like when she smiled from ear to ear, or when you heard that laugh (go

"Oi! Alek! Open the barking door!"
Deryn was yelling at their room's door, trying to get Alek to open it.
"Alek?"
She tried turning the knob, but it was locked. What was his princeliness DOING in there? She backed up and slammed against it. After a few tries, the door almost opened.
"Alek, I'm a smidge away from breaking down the door. Open it or I'm forcing it down! Alek!"
Deryn was starting to become worried. Before she could let her fear grow, she threw herself against the door and landed on the floor of their room.
"Barking stubborn you are-"
Deryn stared at Alek. He was sitting at the table in the corner of their room, staring at

"Dylan?"
Alek opened the door to his friend's room and tried shaking Dylan awake. He mumbled "Five more minutes" before shifting onto his side, facing away from Alek. The archduke laughed and shoved his friend even harder. He cleared his throat before saying,
"Midshipman Sharp!" in a fake Captain's voice.
Dylan immidiately sprang up and screamed,
"Yes, Captain?"
Alek broke into laughter and Dylan gave him an annoyed look.
"Get stuffed!"
He got up and punched Alek playfully on the arm. Alek returned the punch and they both stood there for a second enjoting their laughter. Dylan's smile faded as realization sunk in.
"Oh..."
He sat down

Deryn was sitting by the fireplace at the palace with Alek, his hand resting on her belly - feeling the bump of their first child. Count Volger sat nearby next to the large windows, drinking a cup of tea while he browsed through old books, lit only by the fireplace and a lamp or two. Snow fell lightly on the courtyard outside, shrouding it with a white blanket. It reminded Deryn of her snow days back at Glasgow; scaring the trousers off her brother Jaspart with games they played at the snowy fields. Looking back, she realized she'd gone a
Skyscrapers rose from the ground and seemed to brush the heavens, but the people who walked in their shadow didn't seem to pay much attention to their height. Alek watched them from the fifteenth floor of his hotel room. They were like ants, pushing past each other and scurrying along to get somewhere and the streets were crowded with passenger walkers creeping along at such a slow pace. Ms. Rogers had told him that when the walkers were crowded and slow like this, it was called the Rush Hour, because everyone was trying to get somewhere within that hour. Alek didn't understand the reference though, he saw nothing fast about it. More like th
